The grand prize... a $200 Visa gift card! 8:30am-9:00am Registration, Breakfast & Networking 9:00am-10:30am Keynote Speaker: Darcy Heath, Wonderschool Difference is not Deficit: Embracing the Uniqueness of Each Child’s Culture We use the term cultural awareness all the time in early childhood, but what is culture and what exactly do we need to be aware of? During this session we will explore the various components of culture and how family and community culture influences the lives and experiences of young children. Simple strategies will be shared for supporting each child in ways that are culturally affirming. 10:45am-12:15pm Breakout Session 1: Three amazing presenters to choose from! Contruyendo Cerebros con Vroom (Brain-Building with Vroom) -Ivett Nunez La clase Construyendo Cerebros con Vroom reforzará el conocimiento de los participantes sobre el desarrollo temprano del cerebro y la ciencia detrás de la iniciativa nacional Vroom. Los participantes también desarrollarán una comprensión más profunda de cómo las estrategias de desarrollo intelectual se integran fácilmente en los servicios y la divulgación de Recursos y referencias de cuidado infantil (CCR&R). A Taste of Asian Culture - Yuying Cherry Explore the different perspectives, beliefs, practices, and cultures between Eastern and Western. Learn a better way to communicate with Asian parents and promote Asian students' academic and social development. Creating a Sense of Community and Belonging in the Classroom - Carol Cajica This training concentrates on the importance of creating a sense of community and belonging in the classroom to promote an essence of unity and support children, their family and culture so they can feel connected to each other and caregivers. 12:15pm-1:15pm Lunch 1:30pm-3:00pm Breakout Session 2: Three amazing presenters to choose from! Las Maravillas y Experiencias Del Arte Cultural – Minerva Perez En este taller de arte vamos a desarrollar capacidades, actitudes, comportamientos, y destrezas, y además es un medio de interacción, comunicación y expresión de sentimientos, por medio de differentes actividades cuturales. Cultural Competence in Early Childhood Education – Mirna Mejia Cultural competence is key to building inclusive environments where all individuals can thrive. We will discuss inequality in education and learn what it means to be culturally competent and ways we can commit ourselves to creating thriving learning environments in ECE for all children. Participants will gain knowledge and skills to ensure they are intentionally engaged in and committed to creating culturally relevant & inclusive learning opportunities, how to be allies for all children, & the important role they play in children's socialization. The training includes culturally-relevant and appropriate materials for participants to obtain ideas for implementing in their care environments. My Way, Your Way, Our Way (A Conversation on Cultural Awareness) – Constance Tomaneng Participants will be introduced to what Cultural Awareness is. After gaining a foundational understanding of what it is, the participants will navigate their way into creating a welcoming working environment that fosters diversity and celebrates differences. 3:15pm-4:00pm Keynote Part 2: Darcy Heath, Wonderschool & raffle!
