PA's Longest Married Couple Gets Citation Recognizing Anniversary

POTTSTOWN, PA — The Pennsylvania spouses being recognized as the longest married couple in the commonwealth have been awarded citations for their longevity. Martha and Chester Pish of Pottstown were given citations from U.S. Rep. Madeleine Dean and U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey in recognition of their 80th wedding anniversary. The citations were presented to the Montgomery County couple by State Rep. Joe Ciresi, a western Montgomery County Democrat. "Chester and Martha are a staple of the Pottstown community and have been married for over 80 years, making them the longest-married couple in Pennsylvania," Ciresi said in a statement. "Their joy in each other, in their family and in their life here in Pottstown is an example to us all of lives well lived." According to Ciresi's office, Chester and Martha Pish were married on May 23, 1942, at St. Philomena's Roman Catholic Church in East Lansdowne, Delaware County. The couple, who were married shortly after Chester was deployed with the U.S. Navy During World War II, have three children, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. Ciresi's office said that the representative had previously presented the couple with a citation in recognition of their 77th wedding anniversary. The couple is known for having been very active within their community, including running the BINGO game at St. Aloysius Church for more than two decades.
