NOVATO, CA — The city of Novato is readying to celebrate Pride Month for a second straight year. The North Bay city will open its month-long celebration with a flag raising ceremony at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Novato City Hall (901 Sherman Avenue) that will be open to the public. "Following the success of last year's virtual celebrations, we've been looking forward to an in-person Pride event this year," Assistant City Manager Jessica Deakyne said in a statement. "We're excited to be able to come together with our community and raise the Pride flag in front of our beloved City Hall as a symbol of acceptance and equality here in Novato." The City Council at its May 24 meeting approved a proclamation officially recognizing June 2022 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in Novato. The proclamation recognizes Novato's support of the rights, equality, and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. The rainbow Pride flag will also be flown on the flagpole at the Novato Police Department (NPD) beginning on June 1, and officers will have the opportunity to show their support by sporting NPD Pride patches as part of their uniforms. Throughout the month Novato will feature Pride versions of the city and Novato Proud logos on its Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. City officials said they will promote "content designed to celebrate our LGBTQ+ community and encourage engagement throughout the month of June."
