Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles: New homes and businesses in L.A. may soon come "equipped with electric space heaters, water heaters and stove tops." The City Council voted on Friday that newly-constructed buildings would have to be emissions-free, which means that there will be no more "gas stoves, boilers or water heaters." Other options are appliances powered by "green hydrogen or renewable gas," which are not yet in mass development. Critics, such as the Southern California Gas Co., remind residents that gas doesn't suffer from the same disruptions as the power grid. (L.A. Times/paywall)If you're thinking of taking out the kayak this weekend, head to the Elysian Valley and Sepulveda Basin recreation zones of the Los Angeles River. "You must wear a personal flotation device and a helmet." Also, don't jump in. Swimming is prohibited. (Spectrum News 1) How serious is road rage in L.A.? We learned Friday that reports "spiked 41.4% in the first four months of the year compared with the same timeframe in 2021." The greatest increase was seen in DTLA. Officials believe that this increase could have to do with "lingering effects of the pandemic, with economic woes and other issues impacting the psyche of Angelinos who need to get somewhere." (Patch) Who is to blame for the latest L.A. Lakers' season fiasco? Injuries certainly played a significant role. However, Lakers great James Worthy has also weighed in. We learned Thursday that he believes the team "refused to build over the years" in favor of chasing the quick win. "We need to create players that have cohesiveness. We had it a couple of years ago, and we traded it all away to try to win," he explained. (CBS) The L.A. Dodgers will retire Gil Hodges' No. 14 jersey. The ceremony is planned for the beginning of the June 4 game, when the Dodgers take on the New York Mets. Hodges joins the likes of "Walter Alston, Roy Campanella, Don Drysdale, Jim Gilliam, Sandy Koufax, Tommy Lasorda, Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Don Sutton and Pee Wee Reese."
