Here are the top five stories today in Beaverton: In the wake of the horrific Uvalde, Texas, school shooting, Beaverton School District's Public Safety Director commented on security measures for local schools. Rick Puente has worked in school safety for two decades, but each of these sorts of incidents causes him to reflect on whether or not the district is doing enough to ensure student safety. Learn about BSD's security and prevention measures at KATU. All Beaverton School District students have enjoyed free meals for most of the pandemic. But the school board announced on Monday, May 23, that it will cut the benefit next school year after federal aid ended for the program. The board also allowed schools to increase meal prices by 15 to 20 cents. (USA Track and Field) The leader of a Hillsboro methamphetamine distribution cell was sentenced to 90 months in federal prison on Wednesday, May 25. John Armas, 44, was indicted by a grand jury for an array of charges, including intent to distribute controlled substances back in 2018. He pleaded guilty to the charges in 2020. The Westside Interagency Narcotics (WIN) Task Force worked alongside other agencies to achieve the conviction.
