Description
About the SiteThe River needs YOU! This summer, join FoLAR in the Glendale Narrows to collect trash and prevent waste from polluting our watershed and urban waterways. Together, we’ll make a collective impact and do our part to tend to the vibrant urban ecosystems that thrive throughout Los Angeles. North Atwater Park, now featuring the newly opened North Atwater Bridge connecting Atwater Village to Griffith Park, is a beautiful park located along the scenic Glendale Narrows, the central and longest natural area of the LA River. The park has been expanded to include the restoration of Atwater Creek with native habitat and trash-catching devices to treat urban runoff and improve water quality before flowing into the LA River. The River has an earthen bottom here and is home to lots of birds, including ducks, stilts, egrets, and herons. CleanUp supplies (work gloves and trash bags), hand sanitizer, and a water station are provided. What to Wear & BringThere are areas of this site where you may need to wade into the water in order to access the island that we’ll be cleaning, so wear sturdy, close-toed shoes you don’t mind getting wet, or boots or water shoes if you have them. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen and a hat. We’re providing cleanup supplies, so all you need to bring is a reusable water bottle - we’ll have ice water available onsite. In collaboration with My Friend's Place, we'll be hosting a donation drive at this site. Volunteers are encouraged to donate any of the following new/gently used items to support youth experiencing homelessness: tents, sleeping bags, blankets, portable phone chargers, tote bags/other bags, unisex joggers and hoodies, and masculine pants and shoes (especially sizes 10-13). Donated items will be given to our partners at My Friend's Place to distribute to unhoused youth during their programs.
