Description

Welcome Home, a home goods pantry based in Newton, MA, is pleased to announce the opening of the nonprofit’s new location at 1191 Washington Street in West Newton. Welcome Home provides families experiencing hardship with the basic household items they need to live with dignity. The five year old organization assists hundreds of clients each month by providing much needed kitchen, dining, bedding, and other home goods. “Welcome Home is on the front line supplying basic home goods items to families in need with no fees, forms, or requirements," explains Julie Plaut Mahoney, Executive Director of Welcome Home. “Many of our clients are new immigrants in our communities or may be leaving shelters for permanent housing. All need basic home supplies which we can provide through the generosity of our donors.” Welcome Home’s new headquarters consist of 1,600 s/f divided into three distinct spaces. The first room holds household items which are packed for client pick-up on scheduled days and times. The second space is open for clients to select decorative items that make their house a home such as vases, throw pillows, wall decor, and more. The final area is an office and storage area. Welcome Home was previously housed in 250 s/f; the move has significantly increased the nonprofit’s capacity to serve the needs of the community. Welcome Home was founded in 2016 when Julie Plaut Mahoney saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between older adults downsizing and purging usable home goods, and families in need. In 2019, the organization became a 501(c)(3). The organization collects and redistributes like-new household items. Any items that cannot be used are repurposed or recycled appropriately, thus benefiting the environment.Staffed by over 70 volunteers, Welcome Home accepts home goods from anyone wishing to donate and keep items out of landfills. These goods are cleaned, shelved, and made available to people struggling to meet their basic needs. Presently, Welcome Home is in urgent need of dishes & bowls, small appliances (coffee pots, blenders, microwaves), towels (all sizes) and king and queen size sheets and blankets. Women make up the majority of the requests received, most of whom care for children, parents, spouses, siblings and neighbors. The goods one client receives therefore serve to benefit many, bolstering health, self- esteem, and a sense of well-being. Welcome Home’s vision is to see that every client receives the essential kitchen, bath, bedding, and additional items they need to turn any house into their home.
