LINDENHURST, NY — The Lindenhurst School District, along with other schools across Long Island, are addressing Tuesday's shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and two adults were killed. In a letter to parents and students, Superintendent Daniel Giordano wrote on Wednesday that the district is "indescribably saddened" by the shooting, and that their condolences are with families of the "innocent lives that were senselessly and so violently" taken. "It is unimaginable the pain and sorrow they are facing," Superintendent Giordano. "As a district, we hold in no higher priority the safety and security of our students and staff. Over the past several years we have made immense upgrades to our security infrastructure through comprehensive prevention measures, staff training initiatives and emergency plans." He went onto say that the district maintains a strong partnership with law enforcement. Suffolk County Police also announced on Wednesday that they would step up the patrolling of schools. Some districts such as Sayville School District have added additional security to its schools. "I must stress that this is being done proactively and out of an abundance of caution, not because of a concern for our schools' safety," Giordano said. He also stated that district guidance counselors and staff are available at each school, should any student or adult need support and reassurance of their safety. "As news such as the events of yesterday can bring up varying thoughts, concerns and emotions for individuals of all ages, please know that your Lindenhurst school family is here to support you in any way," he said.
