MADISON, CT —The news of yet another school shooting, this one in Uvalde, Texas that stole the lives of elementary school kids and an educator is horrifically reminiscent of Sandy Hook. East Haven Mayor Joseph A. Carfora shared a message for the community, and families with school age children. And hearkened back to the horror of Dec. 14, 2021 in Newtown. "Yesterday our country was impacted by another despicable senseless act of violence. Bluntly, over the last few weeks this type of violence has devastated too many communities in our country, from our elderly, our minority populations, our teachers, and so sadly, our children," he said. "We in Connecticut are unfortunately aware of how a tragedy like this impacts a community, a state, and a nation," Carfora reminded. "Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the families and communities impacted. The mayor also shared an update on school security. "Recently our police and fire departments conducted school safety training with teachers, school administrators and our school support staff. Chief Lennon has informed me that our police department has stepped up patrols at all school facilities. As Mayor, I pledge support to (East Haven schools Erica) Forti in her efforts to keep our schools safe. We will do everything in our power to protect our teachers and our children." Carfora is referring to the new ALICE program begun in schools. Read more here: East Haven Schools Adopts ALICE: Active Shooter Preparedness Program Forti reached out to families.
