BEVERLY, MA — Beverly resident Ruthy Hope is looking to help clean up the city by bringing back places where people can push their trash in public. Hope created a petition that has garnered more than 775 signatures that she plans to forward to the mayor's office as part of a campaign to bring back the bins that she said disappeared during the COVID-19 health crisis. "I created the petition because I've been frustrated for a while about the missing cans," she told Patch. "Balch Park, for example, is right near my house and has seen a big increase in garbage littering the grass. "I've also been increasingly annoyed by the lack of bins on the city streets. I've never seen any other town that doesn't have trash receptacles in a shopping district, like Cabot and Rantoul streets." Hope said she has seen similar complaints from residents on the Beverly Facebook forums. "I definitely knew that I was not alone in this matter," she said. "Ideally, they would not just bring them back, but they would install Smart Bins, like the ones I've seen on the streets of NYC, where the sun turns the trash into compost." Hope said when she contacted the city to find out why the bins had not been returned since 2020, she was told: "Their consensus so far was that there was less trash without the receptacles." "Which is false based on the evidence I have seen with my own eyes," she said. Patch's call in an attempt to get an explanation for the lack of trash and recycle bins was not returned. "If you're tired of having to carry around your garbage after grabbing a quick bite, a cup of coffee, or walking your pup, then sign this petition," Hope requests on the petition page. "If you're frustrated at having to toss your unfinished ice cream cone onto a neighbor's roof, or feel guilty about sneaking a sandwich wrapper into a random kid's knapsack, then let the mayor's office know by signing this petition. "If you would like to live in a world where you can take comfort knowing your taxes are going into the garbage, like pretty much every other civilized town on the planet, then sign this petition."
