PRINCETON, NJ — Council recently voted on two resolutions that would make Rosedale Road safe for residents. One of the resolutions reduces the speed limit on Rosedale Road from 40 and 45 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour. The other allows road closures for a roundabout construction this summer. Officials expect construction to be completed ahead of the new school year this fall. Last summer, 82-year-old Pinghua Xu was struck by a car while attempting to cross Rosedale Road. Since then, residents have repeatedly urged Council to take steps to address safety concerns. "We are very fortunate that Mercer County really put safety as the utmost priority, and took the action to get us to this point," Deanna Stockton, Deputy Administrator and Municipal Engineer said. "This is a result of a lot of hard work on part of the Engineering Department, a lot of outreach to the county," Councilwoman Eve Niedergang said. She spoke about how dangerous the intersection was and said "the construction of the roundabout and the speed limit are really going to go a long way in addressing that." Mayor Mark Freda thanked Stockton and the municipality's engineering department for working with Mercer County on the matter. "It just shows when we have these partnerships and when we all work together, good things can happen. And the speed with which this is all coming together... is pretty good," Freda said. In April, local and county officials held a public meeting to provide residents with information on the intersection improvement project. The Rosedale Road & General Johnson Drive Intersection and Pathways Improvement Project aims to provide safe pedestrian and bicycle passage across Rosedale Road and improve access and safety for students walking or biking. The project will include installing an 8x10 feet wide shared-use path to replace the existing side path on the north side of the roadway. It will also include the installation of a 5 ft wide concrete sidewalk along the south side of the road along with new curb ramps, crosswalks, and driveway aprons. Thank you for reading.
