PHILADELPHIA — An off-duty Philadelphia Police Officer who was involved in the fatal shooting of Walter Wallace Jr. in 2020 was killed in a motorcycle crash Tuesday night in South Philadelphia, according to authorities and media reports. Philadelphia Police Officer Thomas Munz Jr., 27, died following a crash that occurred at about 6:45 p.m. on the 3300 block of South Broad Street, Fox 29 reports. According to Action News, Munz was on Broad Street when he collided with an SUV being driven by a 22-year-old woman, launching him off the motorcycle and into a pole. The driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with police, NBC10 reports. Munz joined the Philadelphia Police Department in 2017. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said the crash is under investigation. "I join the city in mourning the loss of Officer Thomas Munz, Jr., who was tragically killed in a vehicle crash last night," he said. "The District Attorney's Office extends our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and colleagues in the Department." Munz was one of two officers who shot and killed Walter Wallace Jr. on Oct. 26, 2020 in West Philadelphia. Krasner said the DA's office is nearing the end of its investigation into the incident that began as a health-related 911 call and ended with Wallace, who was seen on camera approaching Munz and Officer Sean Matarazzo with a knife, being killed. Patch has reached out to Philadelphia Police for more information and will update the story when additional details are made available.
