MOKENA, Ill. — A Memorial Day remembrance hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 725 is scheduled to be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Pioneer Cemetery in Mokena.
An additional dedication ceremony is scheduled to be held at 11:30 a.m. at the post, located at 19852 Wolf Road, at which Gerald Rentz's name will be added to the William Martin Post 725 memorial plaque.
"I encourage everyone to come out and remember those who have given their lives for our country in wars over the decades and centuries," said Assistant Village Administrator Kirk Zoellner during the Monday, May 23 Village of Mokena Board of Trustees meeting.
Zoellner said rehab work was performed recently at Pioneer Cemetery.
"This is something we've been working on here for a couple of years," he noted. "We applied for some grants. We were not successful in getting those, but we went ahead and moved forward with this."
Zoellner said the grave markers were professionally leveled, repaired, and reset.
"All this work was performed consistent with the Illinois Historic Preservation guidelines and done by a professional who does this work all over the Chicagoland area," he said. "We want to especially thank longtime Mokena historian Rob Horras for his input and contributions before this all got started so that we did things properly and got the stones in the proper places."
