Increased Police Presence At Manhattan SD114 After TX School Shooting

MANHATTAN, IL — The Manhattan Police Department is adding extra officers on duty and increasing patrols around Manhattan School District 144 schools following the deadly school shooting Tuesday in Texas, according to Manhattan Police Chief Jeff Wold. Manhattan police officers who would normally be on traffic enforcement duty and command staff are also being redirected to increase the police presence around the schools Wednesday, Wold said. "Each school should have coverage all day long," he said. The increased presence is expected to last through the end of the school year, Wold said. The last day for students in pre-K through eighth grade is June 3, according to information on the Manhattan SD 114 website. Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 is not issuing a statement at this time, said D210 Director of Community Relations Jennifer Beshansky. "Each Lincoln-Way campus has law enforcement present every day, and counselors are also available to students at any time," Beshansky told Patch via email. The gunman, identified by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, wore a tactical vest and used a rifle in the attack, according to multiple media reports. Ramos was also killed in the attack, according to reports.
