JOLIET, IL — Joliet police officers arrested 45-year-old resident Thurmond Lurry on Tuesday night on felony charges of aggravated DUI, DUI-drugs and resisting a peace officer. The traffic stop happened around 7:55 p.m. near Fifth Avenue and South Ottawa Street. Joliet police were sent to the area to do a welfare check after someone saw a car hit the curb and the driver was unconscious. "Upon arrival, officers observed Lurry exiting the driver's seat of the vehicle that was resting against the curb," police spokesman Dwayne English announced. According to English, Lurry showed signs of being impaired when officers addressed him and he tried walking away. Lurry subsequently performed poorly on his field sobriety tests, English said. "As officers attempted to place him into custody, Lurry refused to remove his hands from his pockets and would not listen to (the) officer's commands," Joliet police reports show. "Lurry continued to resist, and it took several officers to place him into custody." After being taken to the Joliet police station for booking, Lurry was taken to the Ascension St Joseph Medical Center by the Joliet Fire Department's ambulance for an evaluation due to his level of intoxication, police said. Lurry also made statements to officers about consuming drugs prior to driving, English stated. Lurry was released from the hospital a short time later and brought back to the Joliet PoliceDepartment for processing. He was booked into the Will County Jail around 2 a.m. Wednesday.
