13-Year-Old Brought Loaded Gun To New York School: Report

SYRACUSE, NY — On the same day a gunman fatally shot 19 children and two teachers at a Texas elementary school, a 13-year-old boy walked through the doors of Ed Smith K-8 School in Syracuse with a loaded gun tucked under his shirt, according to a report. However, a possible tragedy was avoided when the boy was stopped by the principal and a school security guard, WSYR-TV reported, citing a joint press conference held Tuesday by Syracuse police and the Syracuse City School District. The eighth-grade student was taken to the principal's office where officials searched him and found a loaded semi-automatic handgun tucked into his waistband, according to WSYR. Authorities said it's unclear why he brought the weapon to school or what he planned to do with it. The boy was arraigned on multiple charges Tuesday and remains in the Hillbrook Juvenile Detention Center. He was also suspended from school pending the results of an investigation, WSYR reported. The incident happened the same day an 18-year-old gunman barricaded himself in a classroom at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and began shooting. By the end of the massacre, 19 fourth-grade students and two teachers were dead. The gunman was identified by Gov. Greg Abbott as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, whom police shot and killed in another exchange of gunfire.
