Armed Phoenix Woman Fatally Shot By Police Monday Morning

PHOENIX — A 47-year-old Phoenix woman has died after she was shot by police officers early Monday morning, officials said. A spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department said that officers from the Maryvale/Estrella Mountain precinct were responding to an unrelated traffic stop near 27th Avenue and Indian School Road at 12:15 a.m. when they heard shots fired. When officers arrived where the shots had been fired, an adult woman flagged down an officer to speak about her car, according to a news release. The officer asked the woman if she was armed and asked her to show them her waistband. The woman said she was unarmed but refused to show her right hip and the officers believed she was hiding a weapon. "Additional officers arrived on scene and gave verbal commands to the suspect which she refused," Sgt. Maggie Cox, spokesperson for the Phoenix police, said in a statement. "The suspect then turned towards the officers and pointed a handgun at them." Two of the officers on the scene fired their guns at the woman. Another officer used a stun bag to help disarm her. Officers administered life-saving measures until members of the Phoenix Fire Department arrived to take the woman to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Officers found a handgun at the scene. The woman's identity was not immediately available. An investigation is currently underway.
