Join Everyday Boston as we celebrate one of our own and host a conversation with screenwriter George Powell, of "The Walk," to be released on June 10. (Watch the trailer.)
A founding member of Everyday Boston, George began writing screenplays while incarcerated. "The Walk" tells the story of an Irish South Boston police officer assigned to protect students from Roxbury during the desegregation of the city's schools in 1974.
George will take the stage with his childhood friend, longtime actor and theater educator Naheem Garcia, who has appeared in more than a dozen films. Both graduates of Boston Public Schools, they'll explore their individual journeys to where they are today, the ways in which the city of Boston has changed (or not changed) over time, and where they see hope moving forward.
"The Walk" features Terrence Howard, Justin Chatwin, and Jeremy Piven. The film has already won several awards for Best Screenplay, including at the Boston International Film Festival.
About the participantsGeorge Powell is the founder of Soular Productions, an independent film company with a mission to amplify the experiences of Black and brown people in Boston's neighborhoods. George is currently fundraising for his next film, "What about us?" about the media's treatment of people of color.
Naheem Garcia is an actor and theater educator who has appeared in dozens of films, including Equalizer 2, Black Mass, and Joy. He has spent much of his life coaching youth in acting at The Huntington Theatre Company and other venues.
Everyday Boston is a nonprofit that connects neighbors across a segregated city through the sharing of life stories. At a time of historic isolation and division, we're cultivating a culture of curiosity and connection across Boston.
