Description
Mullowney Printing is pleased to announce the launch the Sevilla Sierra Printmaking Residency for artists of Mexican heritage living and working in Mexico and the United States. In honor of Mexican printer Federico Sevilla Sierra, the Federico Sevilla Sierra Printmaking Residency aims to preserve traditional printmaking practices by offering artists living and working in Mexico space and support to create work, while building bridges between creative communities in Portland and Mexico. We are honored to introduce Arleene Correa Valencia, the first recipient of the residency. Arleene Correa Valencia is a Mexican born artist living and working in Napa, California. In 2018 Correa de Valencia received her BFA from California College of the Arts, where she finished her MFA in 2020. As a recipient of DACA she has both worked and studied under this legal permit since 2012. Correa de Valencia is one of four children originally from Arteaga, Michoacán, Mexico. Her family migrated to the United States in1997 and established themselves in California’s wine country: Napa Valley. Through painting, textiles, sculpture and found objects she seeks to investigate and question her political status as a registered “illegal alien” by drawing connections to those who are in similar legal confinements. Using her own narrative she touches upon themes of migration, human rights, hardship, discrimination, visibility, invisibility, the fear of deportation and separation. With her art practice Correa de Valencia aims to acknowledge a long history of oppression, resilience and undying strength reflected in her community. She is currently a Bay Area Interdisciplinary Fellow at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, California. Event: 4:00 to 6:00 pm in our NW Portland studio, Arleene will discuss her work from the previous two week residency to be published by Mullowney Printing in the coming months. Please join us for art, discussion, and Mexican themed refreshments and food! More Information: Please email [email protected] Key funding is from the generosity of the Arias Sevilla Family Charitable Fund, whose mission states: We see the importance of art in our everyday life but specially the role of artists to reimagine a different today than the one we are living in now. Our mission is to support Latinx artists, creators, and makers in rebuilding the world around us and nurture their practice. As an immigrant family, the Charitable Fund was created in the spirit of our family’s lineage of painters, book makers, and sculptors and our passion for visual arts. Additional matching support provided by the Nike Community Impact Fund. *Undergrowth Educational Print Fund is a program of the Charitable Partnership Fund, an Oregon 501(c)(3) public charity EIN 93-126796
