Description
The score was locked at 135-135 after four golfers from the Staples and Greenwich girls' golf teams handed in their scorecards.
The next player to walk off the 9th green would determine if Staples, ranked number 1 in the state, or Greenwich, ranked number 3 in the state, would be FCIAC West Division Champions.
That player was Wrecker freshman Rachel Pontoriero, who birdied the last hole to card a 46. This secured the 5-stroke victory, 181-186, and Staples' first sole-ownership of the West Division title since 2016.
"It was a tough, close match but we put in the effort all season and won," said Pontoriero. Junior Reilly McGeehan, a second-year varsity stalwart and
Pontoriero's playing partner for many rounds this year, added "All our hard work finally paid off!"
To be noted was Senior Co-Captain Leni Lemcke's exceptional 3-over par 41 from the white tees. Lemcke is currently ranked the number two golfer in the competitive FCIAC league, and is the top ten golfer in the state.
Senior Co-Captain Lizzie Kuehndorf, Junior Keeva Boyle and Sophomore Kathleen Coffey contributed to the win that handed Greenwich only its second loss of the season. Boyle and Coffey are ranked in the top 25 and Kuendorf top 30 golfers in the state.
The 13-1 Wreckers close out the home season on Wednesday with Trumbull. The final match on May 31 will be against East Division Champions New Canaan at Fairchild Wheeler. FCIAC Championships are on Thursday, June 2 at "The Wheel."
