UNIONDALE, NY — A candlelight vigil was planned for Wednesday in Uniondale to honor victims of two mass shootings, the elementary school in Texas and a supermarket in Buffalo.
The "Light a Candle for Peace" will take place at MLK Peace Park, located at Uniondale Boulevard and Nassau Road.
Nineteen children and two teachers were gunned down at the Texas school on Tuesday.
Town of Hempstead Don Clavin said in a statement: "Hempstead Town is home to a plethora of peoples who proudly celebrate a variety of cultures, religions and creeds. I reject any group that seeks to disturb the harmony found here in our township, and reiterate my commitment to fostering a community welcoming to all."
Police say the motive for the school shooting is not clear.
"When will enough be enough that the powers to be make common-sense gun laws. When will we take mental illness seriously," Nassau County Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams (D-Freeport) said. "When will anger management be taught at an earlier age. Why is it that evil seems to prevail?"
