SAN RAMON, CA — The cheerleading team at California High School is facing backlash after posting pictures on Instagram with a black mannequin head they reportedly referred to as their mascot, NBC Bay Area reported.
Instagram account The Black Bay Area shared the photos showing the all white team and the black mascot head they named Kareem while mentioning the cheer team in a caption that read "what's going on here?"
San Ramon Valley Unified School District Superintendent Dr. John Malloy said the district has expanded its on-campus sensitivity training and may have to consider growing it even more, the station reported.
"We don't accept this. We understand that it's wrong, and we also understand that it's harming some members of our community more than others – especially those who may identify as Black or African American," he told the station.
The Black Bay Area shared a message Monday from Malloy with a caption calling it a "non apology" followed by a letter from the principal Megan Keefer.
