SAN RAMON, CA — Just as heat waves hit the Bay Area and land becomes more at risk for wildfires, the City of San Ramon is looking to add to its Open Space Advisory Committee. Recruiting for two regular members and one non-governmental organization member is active through June 10. The committee makes recommendations to city council on how to prioritize at-risk land, the city said. Committee members also suggest resources and creates partnerships to preserve open space. The term limit is two years and meetings are once a month. According to a new model and report from nonprofit First Street Foundation, 100 percent of all properties in San Ramon are at risk of burning within the next 30 years. "Overall, San Ramon has a major risk of wildfire over the next 30 years. This is based on the level of risk the properties face rather than the proportion of properties with risk," the report states. The First Street Foundation report states 80 million properties in the U.S. are at risk of exposure to wildfire. About 16 percent of the nation's population lives in areas prone to wildfire damage, according to the Washington Post's analysis of the group's data. A significant lack of rain in recent months will likely set the stage for a dangerous fire season, meteorologists at AccuWeather predicted earlier this month. To apply for the committee click here.
