WOLFEBORO, NH — Semiologists are reporting an earthquake struck the Lakes Region on Monday. Just before midnight in Wolfeboro, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre website, a 2.2 magnitude earthquake hit at 3:59 a.m. UTC time or 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The depth of the quake was around 3 kilometers. The quake struck along Wiley Brook and just south of College Road — about 1,000 from the town's shore with Lake Wentworth. While not known for earthquakes, New Hampshire occasionally does experience small ones. Nearly two and half years ago, a 2.1 magnitude quake hit about 35 miles away on the other side of the Lakes Region in Tilton. A 2.0 magnitude earthquake hit Sanbornton in February 2018. Nine months ago, a 1.8 quake hit Canterbury, while a 2.9 quake struck Warner in March 2016. A 2.1 hit the town in April 2015 while in July, a 1.5 earthquake struck Plymouth, and in August of that year, a 2.2 quake hit Epsom. In October 2014, a 1.7 quake struck Concord. The capital city also had a 1.2 in September 2012. The earthquake was not listed by U.S. Geological Survey because it no longer reports quakes under 2.5 magnitude, according to its website.
