Press release from the City of Shakopee: May 25, 2022 The Shakopee Police Department is hosting its annual Torch Run 5K on Wednesday, June 22, to support the Special Olympics. This year's run is a community event that is open to the public! We encourage you to invite family and friends to register for the 5K run or to walk a shorter loop. Here are the details: Event is at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 22 Walk-in registration available at 8:30 a.m., but you are encouraged to register ONLINE if possible: fundraise.somn.org/shakopee5k $20 registration fee gets you a t-shirt Hosted by the Shakopee Police Department with the run starting at 475 Gorman St., Shakopee The money raised from the Torch Run has an extremely powerful and positive impact on the lives of Special Olympics Minnesota (SOMN) athletes. Money raised helps provide training and competitions, athlete leadership programs, health programs, Unified offerings, Young Athletes, and so much more to enrich the lives of those with intellectual disabilities. For example: $5 - Provides a meal to an athlete at an SOMN Competition $10 - Provides a screening and hearing aids to an SOMN athlete $20 - Provides physical therapy screening and coaching to an SOMN athlete $30 - Puts a child through an 8 week SOMN Young Athletes season $45 - Sends a coach through Sports Academy training $60 - Provides an eye exam and glasses to 2 SOMN athletes $100 - Sends a Unified Pair to SOMN's Athlete Leader Program (ALPs University) $250 - Implements a Respect Campaign into a school, business or organization $500 - Provides funding to start a new Special Olympics Minnesota Delegation $1,250 - Sends an SOMN athlete to Special Olympics USA Games This press release was produced by the City of Shakopee.
