Here are the top five stories in Concord today: Just in time for fire season, Con Fire added 27 new firefighters to its ranks on Tuesday when the class of Academy 57 graduated. This class consisted solely of experienced firefighters who chose to join the ranks of Con Fire. Speaking at Monday evening's graduation ceremony, Fire Chief Lewis Broschard said, "Each of these 27 experienced firefighters chose to uproot their careers and families to make a life choice to continue their careers with Con Fire. We appreciate and value their decisions." (Antioch Herald) Menglin Cai, a sophomore at Monte Vista High School, is the winner of the 2022 Congressional Art Competition for California's 11th Congressional District, Congressman Mark DeSaulnier announced in a news release Tuesday. Cai's watercolor painting "Growing Up" will be on display in the United States Capitol, the release said. Second place went to Joseph Pak from the College Preparatory School for his piece "Uprising" and third place went to Concord High School senior Amelia Porter for her quilted fabric collage "I'm Not Okay," the release said. (Patch)Bay Point is getting a new 384-unit residential development on county-owned property, located between state Highway 4, Bailey Road, East Leland and Ambrose Park. Supervisors signed off on the development agreement on Tuesday. The units will qualify as extremely low income, very low income or low income housing. (Claycord.com)The final project of the inaugural "Engineering for Social Good" class at Carondelet High School will provide much-needed housing for farm workers in the area. The girls built a tiny home. They were involved in every aspect of the design and construction of the home, including electrical, plumbing and interior finishes. According to Pioneer Publishers, "the tiny house will provide free housing for local farm workers in collaboration with Hijas del Campo (Daughters of the Field), a nonprofit serving the needs of farmworkers in Contra Costa County." Nice win/win - learning and giving back Carondelet! (Pioneer Publishers)The Antioch City Council voted 3-1 (with Mayor Thorpe dissenting) to extend the postponement on the ban of certain tobacco products until December 1. Tobacco sellers pushed back on the ban due to inventory they had on hand of the banned products and little time to react to the initial ban. Though the ban enactment was postponed, it is still set to be in effect this year, pending a referendum on the statewide ballot in November.
