DETROIT — A shooter hung out the window of a moving car and fired eight shots at officers after police tried to stop the car for reckless driving early Saturday morning in Detroit, police said. Police said officers were watching for drag racing and tried to stop a newer black Ford Fusion for reckless driving on the city's west side at 4 a.m. when dash cam video showed a shooter brandishing a pistol out the passenger window. As officers pulled closed to the car in the area of Davison Avenue and Dexter Street, the shooter fired multiple shots at the police cruiser, officials said. Officers were not struck, but one round pinged off the squad car's roof just a few inches from the driver's head, officials said. "To just inexplicably get shot at, and this is the moment we're going to take your life because you're going to interfere with our fun? That's just absurd," Detroit Police Chief James White said. The video showed a man wearing a dark-colored hoodie with his right leg and torso hanging out of the passenger's-side car's window as it sped eastbound on Davison Avenue. Moments later, the man fired eight shots at the cruiser. That's when the chase ended, as one of the rounds struck the police cruiser's engine block, police said. Police believe the fusion was involved in drifting and drag racing, but they also think the car may have been a decoy to distract officers from the actual drag racing event, White said, according to the Detroit News. "Every single day the men and women of the Detroit Police Department put themselves in harm's way," Chief White said. "This heinous act is irresponsible and could have taken the lives of the officers and innocent bystanders." Police released pictures of the driver of the black Ford Fusion that the man fired those shots from, as well as the other passengers. As of Tuesday morning, police called them persons of interest, but that can change as the investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers of Michigan at (800) SPEAK-UP, or visit Detroit Rewards TV on the city's website.
