BIRMINGHAM, AL — December has been the worst month for the spread of COVID-19 in Alabama, with daily averages throughout the state reaching all-time highs. In Jefferson County, new cases have seen record numbers as well, as the state's largest county has averaged more than 550 new cases per day over the last week. Monday, the Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed 336 new cases in Jefferson County, which beings the county's 7-day average to 563 new cases per day. Daily new case numbers in Jefferson County over the last 7 days: Dec. 22: 790 new casesDec. 23: 960 new casesDec. 24: 763 new casesDec. 25: 608 new casesDec. 26: 153 new casesDec. 27: 367 new casesDec. 28: 336 new cases Jefferson County has reported 160 deaths in December. By comparison, the county reported 29 deaths in October, and 38 in September. ADPH data shows 2,585 people are currently hospitalized in Alabama with COVID-19, the highest figure to date. Jefferson County hospitals are over 80 percent capacity as of Monday.
