Immediate need for an entry-level General Apprentice. The candidate must be dependable, hardworking, and very safety conscious. The applicant will be supervised by experienced employees who provide on-the-job task training through mentoring, coaching, and constructive performance feedback. The ability to understand and communicate information is essential. Applicants must have a desire to learn new skills and be willing and able to listen to and act upon constructive criticism. Primary responsibilities consist of (but are not limited to) repairing and maintaining heavy equipment - servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily based on mechanical (not electronic) principles. Additional duties may include operating heavy equipment, mechanized devices, and/or off-road vehicles - running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as a front end wheel loader, bulldozer, lattice boom cranes, forklifts, and/or watercraft. The model applicant will be able to perform metal fabrication, including welding, burning, and layout to repair barges and marine equipment. This position is very physical and requires strength, agility, endurance, and hand-eye coordination. There are no minimum educational requirements to be a general apprentice; however, completion of high school level education in general shop, welding, mechanical drawing, blueprint reading, physics, and mathematics is desirable. Union Shop: All employees must join the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 701, and they shall maintain membership in good standing as a condition of employment.
