TAMPA, FL — An appeals court Friday upheld Cameron Herrin's 24-year sentence for a 2018 street-car racing crash that killed a mother and her infant daughter on Bayshore Boulevard, according to court documents filed in the 2nd District Court of Appeals. A three-judge panel affirmed Judge Christopher Nash's decision originally made on April 8, 2021, at the Tampa Courthouse. Nash ruled Herrin was guilty on two counts of vehicular homicide and sentenced him to nine years in Florida state prison for the first count and 15 years for the second count, according to WTSP. Herrin and his attorney, John Fitzgibbons, appealed the sentence shortlyafter his sentencing, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Fitzgibbons said after Herrin's sentencing his client should be legally punished but asked why should he serve such a lengthy sentence when the friend he raced, John Barrineau, received only six years? The defense considered them equally culpable. A prosecutor said they were not equally culpable after the state showed evidence that it was Herrin's car that hit the victims. Barrineau had taken a plea deal. The Fatal Incident In 2018, Herrin received a brand new Mustang from his parents as a Tampa Catholic School graduation gift. Two days following graduation, he and a high school friend, Barrineau, were street-car racing on Bayshore Boulevard when Herrin slammed into Jessica Reisinger-Raubenolt, 24, and her daughter at 102 mph as she pushed her in a stroller, according to Tampa police. The speed limit was 45 mph, according to the Times. Authorities said the mom was thrown at least 40 feet. The baby and the stroller landed about 70 feet away. Medical staff at Tampa General Hospital pronounced Raubenolt dead shortly after she arrived at Tampa General Hospital. Her daughter died the next day, police said. Herrin had pleaded guilty in 2020 to vehicular homicide and unlawful racing.
