WESTBOROUGH, MA — Westborough's annual summer water restrictions are now in effect. As of Monday, residents and businesses must follow the restrictions until further notice, or face a fine. Between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily, Westborough prohibits washing vehicles — except commercial car washes — and the use of sprinklers to irrigate lawns, either above or below ground types. Washing buildings and sidewalks is also prohibited, except "as necessary to apply surface treatments such as paint preservatives, stucco pavement or cement," according to the town. Anyone caught violating the water use restrictions will face a $50 fine for the first offense, and $100 for each offense after that, according to town bylaws. As of this week, all of Massachusetts east of the Worcester County line — and including parts of some eastern Worcester County communities — is in the early stages of a drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, with "abnormally dry" conditions.
