SUDBURY, MA — The Sudbury Select Board on Tuesday will proclaim June as LGBTQ+ month ahead of a larger family event celebrating Pride month. On June 11, several local groups — including OUT MetroWest, the Sudbury Cooperative Preschool and the Goodnow Library — will host a "Family Pride Day." The event at the cooperative school, 26 Concord Road, will feature a parade, a drag queen story hour, crafts and a book fair. "We urge all community members to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride by celebrating Pride and displaying Pride banners as visible manifestations of Sudbury's commitment to full inclusion of our LGBTQ+ community," the Select Board proclamation says. Cities and towns across the U.S. typically celebrate Pride month in June to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising in New York City. The June 28, 1969, uprising marked the beginning of the gay rights movement in the U.S. Correction: An earlier version of this story gave the incorrect name of the Sudbury Cooperative Preschool.
