PLANTSVILLE, CT — After two years of being recognized during virtual celebrations due to the coronavirus pandemic, 350 outstanding scholar-athletes from each Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference member school were honored Sunday at the 39th annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet at the Aqua Turf Club.
The honorees from Hamden High School were Amanda Wojenski and Sean McGarry, while Sacred Heart Academy was represented by Sydney Rossacci.
The Scholar-Athlete Program annually recognizes two high school seniors from each member high school whose academic and athletic careers have been exemplary, whose personal standards and achievements are a model to others, and who possess high levels of integrity, self-discipline and courage. The event is the largest of the many honors programs CAS-CIAC hosts each year. The honorees are chosen by the member schools and are submitted to the CIAC.
Retired sportscaster Bob Picozzi was master of ceremonies for the 36th time. Former UConn basketball star Morgan Tuck, a 4-time national champion and 5-year WNBA pro, delivered the keynote address. Bridget Wright, an All-State cheerleader at Derby High School, was formally honored as recipient of the 2022 Michael H. Savage Spirit of Sport Award.
