(Disclaimer under “REFUNDS” applies) Tonight, we celebrate one of the greatest American sitcoms of all time (in this programmer’s opinion) The Golden Girls, which ran from 1985-1992 on NBC. With the recent passing of Betty White, the last surviving Golden Girl, we got to thinking about just how remarkable this TV show was. A consistently well-written and hilarious farce that still always had a beating heart and social conscience. The Golden Girls followed the daily comedy, lives & loves of sixty-something roommates: practical no-nonsense Dorothy (Bea Arthur), her wise-cracking loose cannon mother Sophia (Estelle Getty), hot to trot Southern belle Blanche (Rue Mclanahan), and good-hearted if seemingly absent-minded and naive Rose (Betty White). All widowed or divorced, the four women were routinely getting into trouble with boyfriends, ex-husbands or problems at work, all the while providing support and backing up each other. It’s pretty amazing to think that a show about near retirees had such mass appeal. My 6-year-old sister and my 8-year-old self considered it appointment television at 9pm on Saturdays when staying with our newly divorced father. We would watch, laugh, and RELATE to Dorothy’s ongoing frustration with her schlubby ex-husband Stan (I’m still not sure how that worked). So tonight, because I really do think this show is an American treasure, we’re going to send these Golden Girls off in style. We encourage any willing audience to prepare small anecdotes, tributes or stories from the heart to tell in between episodes. We’ll toast Dorothy, Blanche, Sophia, and Rose one more time. And maybe even examine why we need a show about empathy like this to come back. Best always, Craig Hammill Secret Movie Club Founder.Programmer FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR OUR IN-DOOR THEATER SCREENINGS REFUNDS: We can offer refunds up to 24 hours before showtime.
