Description

PORTSMOUTH, NH — Voters interested in switching party affiliation before the Sept. 13 primary must do so before the end of business on Tuesday. Kelli Barnaby, the Portsmouth City Clerk, said voters in the city have until 6 p.m. on Tuesday to change their registration. After that date, voters who are registered as a Democrat will only be allowed to vote with that ballot; Republicans will only be able to access a GOP ballot. No requests for changes will be accepted between June 1, and Sept. 13. "Those registered as either a Democrat or Republican during a primary election are not allowed to choose a different ballot and are handed the ballot for that affiliation," she said. "These voters are not allowed to make any party change or become an undeclared voter at the polls." Undeclared or "indie" voters, during the primary election, can choose either ballot. Those voters will be temporarily enrolled in that party and then can unregister from the party after casting a ballot. All voters can make political party changes any time during business hours at the city clerk's office after Sept. 14. The general election is scheduled for Nov. 8.
