WALNUT CREEK, CA — Walnut Creek will host its annual Memorial Day observance at 11 a.m. on Monday. It will be held in Civic Park at the corner of Civic Drive and North Broadway in downtown Walnut Creek.
The free ceremony is open to the public. Everyone is welcome, not just Walnut Creek residents.
Walnut Creek Mayor Matt Francois will emcee the event, with accompaniment from theWalnut Creek Concert Band playing patriotic tunes under the direction of Harvey Benstein.
Gold Star Mom Mary Tollefson, whose son Benjamin was killed in action in Iraq in 2008, will deliver the keynote address.
Ben Tollefson was a graduate of Walnut Creek's Berean Christian School.
Father Paulson Mundanmani will provide the invocation and blessing.
The commemoration will end with a procession across the street to the Veterans Memorialoutside of City Hall, the playing of Taps and lowering the flags to half-staff.
North Broadway will be closed to traffic between Civic Drive and Cypress Street during the hour-long ceremony.
Chairs will be provided, although visitors are welcome to bring blankets or their own chairs.
