ROCHESTER, MN — It's Tuesday night, and the polls are now closed in the 1st District primary race. A total of 20 candidates from the state's four major parties are hoping to win the seat that was vacated by the late Rep. Jim Hagedorn, a Republican. Hagedorn, 59, died of cancer in February. He represented Minnesota's 1st District from 2018 until his death. Gov. Tim Walz set the special primary election for May 24, in accordance with state law. As of 10 p.m., Jeremy Munson led the Republicans with 6,240 votes, while Brad Finstad trailed just behind him with 5,735 votes. At the same time, Jeff Ettinger led the Democrats with 4,371 votes. The next closest candidate to him was Sarah Brakebill-Hacke, with 1,051 votes. In July 2021, the congressman announced that kidney cancer had resurfaced. Hagedorn's wife and former Minnesota Republican Party chairwoman Jennifer Carnahan is among the 20 candidates on Tuesday's ballot. Other Republican hopefuls include state Rep. Jeremy Munson and former state Rep. Brad Finstad. Former President Donald Trump declined to make an endorsement in the race. Democrats who are seen to have a good shot at victory Tuesday night include Jeffrey Ettinger, who is entering politics after being the CEO of Hormel Foods. Other Democrats in the race include Richard Painter, a former White House ethics lawyer in President George W. Bush's administration. Painter is now a University of Minnesota law professor. Because Hagedorn died before his term was up, the race Tuesday is being held in the old 1st District boundaries. The district will vote again in August for a special general election, in which the candidate who will finish the last few months of Hagedorn's term will be chosen. Then, a November election will be held in the new boundaries that were drawn after the 2020 Census. That election will determine who holds the officer from 2023 through 2026.
