ELMHURST, IL – In the last few days, Elmhurst police have handled cases involving a bike-vs.-bike crash, a gun theft, abandoned cars, a dog found in a car, retail theft and a missing person. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports: Bike-vs.-bike crash Two members of the Elmhurst Bicycle Club were riding together about 6:30 a.m. Friday in the 100 block of West Park Avenue when they collided, causing them to both fall off their bicycles. One of the bicyclists was taken to Elmhurst Hospital for head injuries. Gun theft A handgun and jewelry were stolen between Dec. 1, 2020, and Sept. 30, 2021, from a safe in a bedroom in the 200 block of West Winthrop Avenue. The victim said he spent some time away from his home. During the time he was away, the victim hired several contractors to work in his house. The theft was reported Thursday. Abandoned cars A York High School auto shop teacher told police Thursday that a student brought in a car to the shop as a project earlier this year. But then he abandoned it. The owner said he had no intention of getting the car because it did not have an engine, which was taken out during the class. A white Buick Century in poor condition was found about 8 a.m. Thursday in the 700 block of North Larch Avenue. It was determined to be abandoned. It was towed away. Dog found in car A dog was found about 4 p.m. Thursday in a car in a shaded area in the 400 block of South Parkview Avenue. The dog appeared unharmed, but had heavy matting on its ears and hind legs. The owner was notified and was referred to agencies to help with the care of the dog. DuPage County Animal Services also was notified. Retail theft A man placed an over-the-counter allergy medication into a gift bag and then stole the items about 10 p.m. Thursday at Jewel, 944 S. York St. Officers could not find the man. The suspect was described as black, 35 to 40 years old, 6 feet, and wearing blue jeans, a white hat and a black face mask. An investigation is pending. Missing person A missing person was found shortly before midnight Thursday at Lake and Grand. The person, who was reported missing in Chicago, was taken to Elmhurst Hospital. Storage unit burglary Two locked storage units were burglarized between March 23 and May 20 at the storage building at 297 W. Lake St. Several items were stolen.A resident in the 500 block of South Rex Boulevard told police Friday that someone stole her purse from her unlocked car in the driveway. The victim later found her purse inside her son's backpack. Phone found A black Apple iPhone was found in the roadway about 10 a.m. Friday on Carlton Court. A phone number was retrieved, but attempts to contact the owner were unsuccessful. The phone was placed into evidence for safekeeping. Bail bond violation A woman in the 500 block of North Van Auken told police Friday that a man violated his bail bond for a domestic battery charge. The suspect was ordered to have no contact with the woman until further notice from the court. A message was left with the suspect to call an officer. Charges are pending.
