Description
CARLSBAD, CA — A DUI checkpoint is scheduled Friday night in Carlsbad.
The checkpoint is slated to begin at 6 p.m. Friday and end at 2 a.m. Saturday on Carlsbad Boulevard at Beech Avenue, according to the Carlsbad Police Department.
"Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI collisions and arrests," the department said in a news release. "The primary purpose of the checkpoint is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired."
During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Drivers charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to the department.
The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
