BATAVIA, IL — Police officers in Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles are joining forces to increase patrol during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, officials announced.
Starting Monday and lasting through May 30, police will be conducting location patrols and focusing enforcement efforts on high-traffic thoroughfares: Randall Road, Route 31, Route 25 and Kirk Road. The campaign is in an effort to reduce crashes and enhance roadway safety, officials said.
"With the weather seemingly improving and more people getting out to enjoy it, police in the Tri-Cities are looking to ensure the safety of all motorists," officials said in a news release.
During the campaign, police will educate drivers and enforce traffic laws including speeding, distracted driving, seat belts, Scott's Law and driving under the influence.
Under Scott's Law — named in honor of Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant Scott Gillen who was hit by a car and killed in 2000 — drivers should change lanes or significantly reduce their speed when approaching emergency vehicles or passing a car stopped on the side of the road.
"The Geneva, Batavia, and St. Charles Police departments remind all motorists to drive safely by following the rules of the road, avoiding distracted driving, adhering to Scott's Law, and allowing more time to reach their destination during high traffic times," officials said. "The goal of the initiative is to ensure everyone arrives safely at their destinations and can enjoy the week leading up to the unofficial start of summer."
Police said each agency will implement an enforcement plan based on the individual needs of each community.
