Pride Flag: Arlington Heights Library Board To Hold Special Meeting

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Just a little over a week after approving a flag policy that allows the LGBTQ Pride flag, among others, to be flown at the library, the Arlington Heights Memorial Library Board of Library Trustees will convene a special meeting. The meeting, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, in the library's Hendrickson Room, will focus on clarification and proposed revisions to Policy 7.007 Arlington Heights Public Library Flag Policy. On May 17, the Board voted 4-2 to adopt the policy during its regular monthly meeting. Currently, the library flies the flags of the United States and the State of Illinois. The approved policy permits the flying of additional flags chosen by the library. The Pride flag would be flown during Pride month in June. RELATED: Library To Fly Pride Flag After Arlington Heights Village Opts Not To The decision came one night after the Arlington Heights Village Board rejected revisiting its own flag display ordinance, which limits the number of flags flying on property owned, leased or controlled by the Village to just the current four: United States of America, State of Illinois, Village of Arlington Heights and the National League of Families POW/MIA flags. That flag policy was approved in July 2021 amid calls to include the Pride flag. The Board will also discuss on May 25 criteria for determining acceptable flags to be flown on the Library's flagpole in accordance with the new policy.
