Description
For most of evolutionary history, subjectivity and tribalism were more advantageous than knowing the absolute truth or being completely free from bias. For most of evolutionary history we did not have modern life saving technology that required a perfect interpretation of reality to utilize appropriately. Instead we had the importance of intense peer bonding that often required a slightly warped sense of reality. If there wasn't an outgroup to complain about and an ingroup to bond with, we would not have stuck together in the close knit, cooperative communities that made us a successful species.
Back to politics...Basically, if you fall heavily towards a partisan extreme, you may be smart and successful, but you're also wrong. You're a slave to your hard wired tribalistic instincts. We all are, but you can choose to have a little self awareness about it.
It's my belief (and I know I'm not alone in this) that social media has kicked this tribalism into ultra high gear. It's a little scary when you start to realize that the human race may very well tear itself apart little by little one Facebook post at a time...
