NEW YORK CITY — Rudy Giuliani took a break from peddling unfounded election conspiracies Sunday to shout expletives in front of children at a parade meant to celebrate the state of Israel. A 35-second video posted by Forward reporter Jacob Kornbluh shows the former mayor's blowup at the Israel Day parade. The heckler's shouts couldn't be heard in the video, but a visibly angry Giuliani responded with a retort about his record on crime as mayor. "I reduced crime, you jack---," he shouted in front of at least three children, the video shows. Giuliani's claim in the video about reducing crime during his mayoralty is broadly true, as is his assertion that it's up during Mayor Eric Adams' short time in office. But NYPD data shows that during 2001 — Giuliani's final year in office — that all major crimes, including murders, were much higher than in 2021. Adams may be presiding over a 34.2 percent jump in major crimes, but murders are still down 11.8 percent from this same point last year. Giuliani, however, wasn't content to rehash his criminal justice record with the heckler — instead, he turned to insults against President Joe Biden. As Giuliani's escorts try to get him to march along, he turned back to yell more insults at the heckler, the video shows. "You are a brainwashed a------," he shouted. "And you're probably as demented as Biden." The idea that Biden is somehow demented or incapacitated has floated in conservative circles for years, who base it off his age and verbal stumbles during speeches and off-the-cuff remarks. Biden has been open that he has had a lifelong struggle with stuttering. Giuliani's own erratic public appearances in recent years — often in service of spewing falsehoods about the 2020 election — have raised eyebrows and, arguably, tarnished the legacy of the man once hailed post-9/11 as "America's mayor." Among many other incidents, there was the Nov. 7, 2020, news conference Giuliani launched in front of Four Seasons Total Landscaping, in between a sex shop and crematorium. Giuliani's trail of "demonstrably false and misleading" claims about the 2020 election prompted court officials to suspend his New York law license. They did so in a scorching 33-page decision that outlines, and thoroughly debunks, Giuliani's election claims.
