DOVER, FL — Two deputies shot a suspect Monday who hid in a shed near Thonotosassa Road in Dover, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said at a news conference Monday. Dwayne Davis, 35, of Dover was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where medical staff last listed him in critical condition, Chronister said. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office had two arrest warrants for Davis on charges of aggravated battery for shooting a relative and violating probation for having a concealed weapon, Chronister said. Deputies said Davis shot a relative in Dover on April 20 during an argument they had about a work payment. Sgt. Jason Gulf and K-9 Deputy Charles Perdomo were out on a community walk talking to residents in Dover Monday. Some of the residents in the area where Thonotosassa Road intersects with McIntosh Road told the two deputies that Davis lived in a shed nearby, Chronister said. Deputies then saw Davis' girlfriend standing outside the shed. The girlfriend would not tell the officers if Davis was inside the shed, Chronister said. Gulf and Perdomo knocked on the door, and told Davis to come out and surrender. Then the officers cut the shed's padlock and went inside with the K9, Chronister said. According to Chronister, the K9 pulled off the blanket Davis was hiding under. Deputies said Davis pointed a gun at them, which he then dropped, Chronister said. When Davis reached for another gun, the officers shot him several times in the upper torso, Chronister said. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate this shooting, which is standard protocol when a deputy shoots a suspect. Sgt. Gulf has been with the sheriff's office since 1998, and K-9 Deputy Perdomo has been with the sheriff's office since 1995. Chronister said neither deputy has previously used deadly force.
