His books reveal a passion for communicating and applying biblical ideas in a post modern culture. Portrait of a Disgruntled Prophet: Samuel’s Resistance to God and the Undoing of Saul The story of Saul, Israel’s first king, is a tragic one. Israel began as a nation without a monarchy (different from almost every ancient Near Eastern society we know of). Although it was the people who asked for a king so they could be like the other nations (1 Samuel 8:4–5), God accepted their request (1 Samuel 8:21–22) and chose Saul specifically (1 Samuel 9:15–16). Yet Saul ends up as a confused and vacillating leader, and is ultimately replaced by David. The prophet Samuel is also chosen by God (1 Samuel 3). Samuel not only anoints Saul as king (1 Samuel 10:1), but he presides over Saul’s demise and removal from the monarchy (1 Samuel 15). Yet few Bible readers have attended carefully to the role of Samuel in undermining Saul’s ability to rule well. In these three talks, we will examine the power dynamics between Samuel and Saul to see what lessons we can learn about how we use power badly or well in the church today. Saturday, June 25th, from 9am to 1:00pm This lecture series is hosted by our friends at Church of the Messiah and is suitable for friends and family. Seating is limited so please get your free tickets on this page. We look forward to seeing you there. Dr. Richard Middleton J.
