Description
RANCHO MIRAGE, CA — A weekend DUI checkpoint in Rancho Mirage resulted in three arrests and 19 citations, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department announced.
The checkpoint was held from 7 p.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Saturday at Highway 111 and Library Way.
According to Sgt. Edward Soto, during the operation two people were arrested for DUI, one person was arrested for an outstanding felony vehicle theft warrant, and 19 drivers were cited for operating a vehicle without a license or with a suspended/revoked license.
In total, 581 vehicles were screened at the checkpoint, the department reported.
"Checkpoint locations are based on a history of collisions and DUI arrests," according to the sheriff's department. "The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired."
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
