The exciting culmination of Foss Waterway Seaport's local tall ships event, Windjammer Week (June 22-25) will be the start of the 23rd annual Captain Raynaud International Schooner Race on Saturday, June 25th, at noon! This event will feature Washington State's Tall Ship, the brig Lady Washington, as well as several beautiful and historic local schooners (a type of classic sailboat with two or more masts, with the forward mast being shorter than the aft mast, popular around the turn of the 20th century as fishing vessels off the Grand Banks) including the Zodiac, Martha, Alcyone, Pleiades, Merrie Ellen, Prudence, and Red Jacket!
The best viewing opportunities for the start of the race will be at Thea Foss Park. No admission required, get there early to find a good spot to sit and watch the pre-race maneuvering! The finish of the first leg of the race will occur off Alki Point in West Seattle sometime later that evening. The final leg of the race will conclude in Port Townsend the evening of Monday, June 27th, with viewing opportunities at Point Wilson. The best seats in the house, however, will be on the racing schooners themselves - tickets are available to join this exciting event!
Want to check out the tall ships before the race? Lady Washington and several of the schooners will be available for deck tours, free with admission to Foss Seaport Museum during Windjammer Week, June 22-24, during normal museum hours. Or, join one of the vessels for an evening sail on Commencement Bay.
