The Tony Furtado Acoustic Band featuring Matt Flinner, Ross Martin & Eric Thorin
Tony Furtado, renowned slide-guitarist, award-winning banjo player, and singer/songwriter, returns to his old stomping grounds of Colorado, this time performing as the Tony Furtado Acoustic Band. The band features all three members of the Matt Flinner Trio, an experimental bluegrass trio, featuring Matt Flinner on mandolin, Ross Martin on guitar and Eric Thorin on bass.
The Acoustic Band is a reunion of sorts. Furtado and Flinner joined together in Sugarbeat, a groundbreaking acoustic Bluegrass/pop band in the 1990s, and have been playing together since they were teenagers. Martin and Thorin reunite with Furtado after being in the Tony Furtado Band 20 years ago when they all called the front range home. Tony offers, “So as you can see, it's a real special thing that I get to have these guys in my band for this tour!”
Furtado’s most recent project is his banjo-focused album, Decembering, recorded remotely over the last year plus. “Tony Furtado, banjo player, is back…in a big way,” writes banjo master Tony Trischka in his liner notes to Decembering, the brand-new album from Tony Furtado. “He’s planted his flag in the midst of the fertile ground that is modern banjo. Texturally fresh, confidently audacious, rich and giving, this recording is a masterpiece.” Because of the pandemic, Decembering was recorded in isolation, with no face-to-face contact between musicians. He would record his parts first, send them out to each player to put down their parts one at a time, sometimes doubling back to re-record each part to fit better as the tune grew and evolved.
