Fundraiser for our Brother William "Showtime Murphy" “I am my Brother’s Keeper” The Friends and Family of William “Showtime” Murphy are asking for your financial support for our Friend and Brother! If you can give more, please do, but give what you can! We appreciate all donations. The Fundraiser is being held Thursday, May 26, 2022 from 6-8pm at “The Mix Bricktown” Downtown Detroit (641 Beaubien). Thanks for your love and support! Here is His Story…. William J. Murphy was living a great life. A 39 year old husband and father of five with a budding career teaching at Legacy Charter Academy, William was respected at work and in the community as a recently elected school board member in Harper Woods. On Friday, September 3, 2021, all of that would change. William would always barbecue for the Labor Day weekend. This was a tradition started by his late grandmother when he was a child. After prepping his food for the next day, William was relaxing with his wife of 6 years, Kim. Unexpectedly, he began choking and asked Kim for a glass of water. He consequently began choking on the water and then passed out. Immediately, Kim called for an ambulance and William was rushed to St. John’s Hospital in Detroit. It was then found that William was suffering from an aortic aneurysm. He was swiftly airlifted to University Of Michigan hospital where he was immediately operated upon by Dr. Shinichi Fukuhara. While in surgery, William coded for seven minutes and consequently had a stroke during the ordeal. Studies have shown that 85% of people with a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm die before they reach the hospital or have surgery. Fortunately, William was not in the majority on that day. After a stay of over 60 days, William was released from the hospital on November 6, 2021. Since leaving the hospital, William has had continued physical and occupational therapy. Due to the severity of his incident, WIlliam had to have all of the toes on his right foot amputated. Thinking that applying for disability would assist him with continuing to take care of household responsibilities, William was denied disability benefits twice for reasons never given. After his FMLA ran out, he was forced back to work with threats of termination if he did not. With a wife who is currently unemployed due to becoming his full time caregiver, things have looked bleak at times for this young family. This is the reason we are reaching out to you as his friends.
