In regards to discharging refrigerant in the atmosphere, I offer up this help to "do yourself mechanics" in this community. Please do not discharge, it not only illegal but it's foolish because this refrigerant is very expensive now and wasteful. I am section 609 of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 certified in repair of R12 and R134, I have reclaim equipment and would be willing to for a reasonable expense to reclaim your refrigerant and you can do the repairs or I can consult and help.
